The IPA Lifetime Achievement Award acknowledges the lifetime contribution of individuals for outstanding permafrost science and engineering research, and/or for exceptional contributions to the international permafrost research community.
The first of these awards was made during the European Conference on Permafrost (EUCOP III) in June 2010. The second was awarded during the Tenth International Conference on Permafrost (TICOP) in June 2012. The third was awarded during the Fourth European Conference on Permafrost (EUCOP4) in June 2014, and the fourth was awarded in June 2016 during the 11th International Conference on Permafrost (ICOP 2016) in Potsdam, Germany.
The nomination process for the award involves a lifetime CV and letters of support. At least two letters of support are required from Adhering Bodies other than the home Adhering Body of the nominee. The recipient of the IPA Lifetime Achivement Award 2012 is Prof. Nikolai. N. Romanovskii.
