Ten International Conference on Permafrost (TICOP)

The International Permafrost Association is excited to introduce the Tenth International Conference on Permafrost, to be held in June 2012 for the first time in Russia since 1973. The International Conference on Permafrost, held every four years, is the premier venue for all research related to permafrost.

The conference will focus on both arctic, antarctic and alpine permafrost research. The theme of the conference is “Resources and Risks in permafrost regions in a changing world” and refers to both the impacts of a changing world on permafrost and the impact of permafrost on a changing world. It also uses the world “resource”, which, in the host university tradition, relates to permafrost as both an industrial and environmental resource. The conference will also host official IPA Executive Committee and Council meetings.

1. Proposed themes for the sessions of the conference:

• Permafrost distribution and mapping
• Greenhouse gas fluxes (CO2, CH4 and N2O) in permafrost regions
• Carbon and nitrogen pools in permafrost soils
• Microbiological communities in alpine, polar and planetary permafrost
• Planetary permafrost geomorphology
• Permafrost modeling in alpine and polar regions and feeds into regional and global climate models
• Climatological forcing and permafrost dynamics
• Sea level change and coastal permafrost dynamics
• Subsea permafrost distribution and characteristics
• Periglacial geomorphology and cryostratigraphy
• Permafrost as a paleo-environmental proxy
• Remote sensing of permafrost and related parameters
• Geophysics in permafrost science
• Permafrost and gas hydrates
• Permafrost and glacier interaction in alpine and polar regions
• Impacts of permafrost degradation on terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems
• Permafrost controls on hydrologic and surface heat flux processes
• Natural Hazards and permafrost, including extreme events (rockfalls, floods,droughts, etc.)
  
• Permafrost micromorphology: soils, ice segregation, frost heave and water migration
• Permafrost hazard mitigation, urban planning and community vulnerability
• Cold regions infrastructures and engineering
• Active layer dynamics in alpine and permafrost regions
• Permafrost as a cryogenic resource
• Observing systems and permafrost
• Permafrost data management and data dissemination

2. Registration:

Registration will open on the 1st of August 2011 and will be opened until the conference An early bird registration rate will be provided. All further information on the registration will be made available online.

3. Extended Abstracts and/or proceedings:

Submissions to the conference will be in the form of papers and/or extended abstracts and will be submitted online at http://www.ticop2012.org
Papers will be six pages long and peer-reviewed in the tradition of the proceedings of the International Conference on Permafrost. They will have to be submitted around a year in advance (15 August 2011) in a pre-formatted format. For the first time, however, you will not be required to provide a six-pages paper to obtain an oral presentation at the conference. No preference will be given to peer-reviewed papers during the selection of oral presentations.
Instead, we encourage you to submit extended abstracts which will be due on 15 December 2011. The extended abstracts will be one page maximum and will be compiled in a book of abstracts given to registrants at the conference. With an extended abstract, you will be eligible for both poster and oral presentations.

4. Field excursions:

The field excursions planned for the conference are listed below:

A. YAKUTYA

Ground ice, thermokarst and alasses of central Yakutia:

• Excursion 1 - Yakutsk – Mamontova Gora (Aldan). By speed-boat or ship of the Melnikov Permafrost Institute (up to 10 persons). Ground ice, ice wedges and massive ice layers – 2-4 days.
• Excursion 2 - Central Yakutia. 2-3 day excursions in bus and cars. Alasses, pingo, other cryogenic forms and processes, icing.
• Excursion 3 - Mirny mines hydro-power stations

Shore processes, subaqueous cryolithozone, icy complex in the Lena river lower reach (Tiksi).

• Excursion 4 - 10-day excursion on the comfortable ship “Demian”
• Excursion 5 - 2-4-day excursions by charter flights + motorboat (+ flight to Bykovskyi peninsula, Muostakh island, Tiksi outskirts, submountain permafrost objects) to international research stations “Samoilovskii island”, “Lena-Nordensheld”.

Springs and icing glades of Central Yakutia, field development, roads, bridges, excavations (Southern Yakutia)

• Excursion 6 - 2-day excursion by bus or cars to the sources of the interpermafrost ground waters of Central Yakutia
• Excursion 7 - 2-day excursion by bus or cars to the Chara depression – cryogenic processes and formations

B. KRASNOYARSK TERRITORY

• Excursion 8 -5-8 day excursion by aircraft or/and boat to Dudinka (Norilsk), Dikson and return. Ground ice in the Enisei river lower reaches, caves in Norilsk, outcrops in Dikson settlement

C. TYUMEN PROVINCE

• Excursion 9 - 5-10-day excursion by scheduled flight to Salekhard, Labytnangi, then by chartered railway transport Bovanenkovo and return. Geocryological polygons, ground ice, cryogenic processes, engineering constructions on the Yamal Peninsula
• Excursion 10 - 4-8-day excursion by scheduled flight to Salekhard , then by leased helicopter to Amderma Geocryological polygons, ground ices, cryogenic processes on the Yugorskii Peninsula (Amderma, Shpindler)
• Excursion 11 - 5-day excursion by airplane or railway to Novyi Urengoy , Geocryological polygons, engineering constructions of the Urengoy oil-and –gas field by leased transport (cars).

D. TRANSBAIKALIA

• Excursion 12 - By motor boat from Listvyanka (Irkutsk) to Severobaikalsk, by train to Chara, from Chara to canyon Mramornyi along the middle Sakukan valley.
• Excursion 13 - Baikal and the railroad around the Baikal (3 days and return to the airport of Irkutsk
• Excursion 14 - Chara- middle Sakukan- canyon Mramornyi
• Excursion 15 - Chita: an experience of urban development in the cryolithozone of southern type
• Excursion 16 - 3-days excursion to the Azarova continental glacier by helicopter.
