IPA Activities

The Action Groups of the IPA are meant to fund targeted groups working towards the production of well-defined products. Action Groups are funded on a competitive basis at up to 2500 € per year. These groups have limited terms and focus on clearly defined research outputs, such as maps, science plans, or databases, that can be supported through the organization of workshops, management support, technical support, etc.

The Global Terrestrial Network for Permafrost (GTN-P) is a network for monitoring of the active layer and the Thermal State of Permafrost (TSP).The IPA manages the GTN-P. The Circumpolar Active Layer Monitoring (CALM) program has 125 reporting stations and TSP has identified over 800 boreholes; both include a total of over 15 participating countries.

The Arctic Coastal Dynamics (ACD) focuses on the estimation of the organic carbon content and mineral transfer from eroding coastal permafrost onto the Arctic shelves. The Arctic Circumpolar Coastal Observatory Network (ACCOnet) coordinates observations at Arctic coastal sites

The Carbon Pools in Permafrost Regions (CAPP) project aims at quantifying below-ground organic matter quantity and quality in regions characterized by the presence of isolated to continuous permafrost.

The Working Groups of the International Permafrost Association address issues related to specific areas of permafrost research

The Standing Committee on Data, Information and Communication (SCDIC) coordinates data management and outreach efforts

The IPA activities for the International Polar Year prompted a large range of activities that now continue as long-term research efforts

The Permafrost Young Researchers Network contributes to the strengthening of the young permafrost researcher community
